So, A long post after a long time… Is Indian democracy really under threat? Why the Citizens are opposing CAB (Citizenship amaidment bill), now it is CAA( Citizenship amaidment act) and NRC(National Register of Citizens)….??? What is Indian secularism? Who are those supporting CAB? Do we really need to care? So let’s start… In last few days you might have seen few status posts, videos which might have been either opposing CAA/ NRC or supporting it. So first thing, Indian Democracy… Indian democracy is based on Indian Constitution. Article 14 of the Indian Constitution deals with equality before law and equal protection of laws while Article 15 declares that the state cannot discriminate against citizens only on the basis of religion, race, caste, sex and also place of birth. Now, what is CAB? providing a path to Indian citizenship for Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Parsi, and Christian religious minorities from the neighboring Muslim majority countries of Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. This CAB is fundamentally discriminatory as it differentiates the citizens based on the caste. (United Nations) So, yes, Indian democracy is under threat. What is NRC? The National Register of Citizen is a registry maintained by the Government of India containing names & certain relevant information for identification of Indian citizens of the Assam state. The register was specifically made for Assam state. However, on November 20, Home Minister Amit Shah declared during a parliamentary session that the register would be extended to the entire country. Why these protests? When nationwide NRC will be conducted, all the citizens will have to provide their documents in order to prove their Citizenship. For those who have documents, they will be get citizenship. Now for those who don’t have documents and are Non-muslims, they will get citizenship under CAB. But those who don’t have documents and are Muslims will not get citizenship and will be sent to stateless and sent to detention centres. That’s the reason, these protests are going on. What is secularism in India? Secularism has different meanings in different countries. “Secular” and “socialist” words were added in Indian Constitution in 1976. Secular: धर्मनिरपेक्ष India is secular country and in India state cannot differentiate citizens based on caste. Who are those supporting CAB? In simple words, “आंधळे भक्त”… Those who are following some leaders without thinking rationally and following every statement blindly. Which are these organisations? ABVP, the youth wing of RSS… And many like this. Along with them, you might have been familiar with name “BJP IT Cell”. If not Google it, it might open your blind eyes. This online protests are supported by BJP IT Cell and their allies. Do we really need to care? As a citizen of India I want to live in democratic India where Constitution of India is followed. These government policies, Discriminatory acts, seem to be the initial steps or fascism and that’s why I fear. If you think this is neutral situation, then in the view of the victim, you are not neutral and some other day in the future, we might be the victim. So this is about this. What do you think?
